Different structural designs of wood-burning stoves in southern regions


The front-draft chimney structure above the stove opening and the rear-draft chimney structure at the tail end of the stove body are common designs for wood-burning stoves in southern China. Both designs are relatively extreme: even if they achieve smokelessness, they do so at the significant cost of wasting large amounts of thermal energy. By excessively enlarging the flue and the smoke outlet, these designs create an overly strong draft in the chimney. As a result, the firebox loses heat too rapidly, making it not only impossible to maintain a stable temperature but also preventing the temperature from rising high enough to meet the conditions required for secondary combustion. This leads to extremely high wood consumption and very low thermal efficiency.

Moreover, some wood-burning stoves lack a fire-retaining ring altogether or have only a single, “horseshoe-shaped” fire-retaining ring, which clearly results in inferior thermal efficiency compared to stoves equipped with dual fire-retaining rings.

  However, we must always adopt a dialectical approach to examining issues: local living environments and available fuels both influence the structural design of wood-burning stoves and imbue them with distinctive regional characteristics. For instance, in the northern plains, the primary fuels are typically straw and wheat stalks—these materials burn with vigorous heat but not for very long. When stir-frying dishes, one has to keep adding fuel continuously; this is precisely why a customary practice has emerged: one person tends the fire at the stove mouth while another handles the cooking on the back side. Moreover, since materials like straw are relatively soft and don't require short segments, wood-burning stoves in these regions often lack a dedicated stove door altogether. Additionally, a stack of firewood is usually kept beside the stove body for easy access. In some areas, where the wood-burning stove is connected to an earthen bed, the stove’s height must be lowered accordingly—even to the point where the stove mouth itself serves as both the feed opening and the air inlet, with no separate air duct designed separately.

  Such stoves—characterized by their local flair—have emerged from people’s careful observation of daily life and their surroundings, their astute utilization of available resources, their synthesis of previous generations’ experiences, and their continuous reflection and refinement. In today’s information age, a wide variety of wood-burning stoves are spreading via the internet, each leveraging its own strengths while compensating for its weaknesses. Through ongoing improvement and innovation, these stoves are meeting the demands of the times, bringing convenience and delightful enjoyment to people’s lives.

  Therefore, only by continuously meeting people’s growing demand for a higher quality of life will wood-burning stoves have room to survive in the future—and only then will traditional crafts like making wood-burning stoves have a viable future and be passed down to the next generation...
